The Foundation
1931 - The Engineer Giovanni Battista Profumo builds in Moncalieri in province of Turin the first IPLOM works - Piedmontese Mineral Oil Processing Factory (Industria Piemontese Lavorazione Oli Minerali) – aimed to the mineral oil treatment.

1943 - Just during the war, Profumo’s brothers transferred the activity in Busalla where the refinery was born. In fact, during wartime and after, the need of mineral oil increases.

Around Genoa there are nine refineries, this is a special strategy zone for the oils distribution thanks to the closeness to the sea and to the Po Valley.

The Increase
1952 - Plant is just supplied by road haulage, with long truck queue, day and night. The treatment capacity grows up according to the consumptions: from 10,000 tons per year in 1952 to the 160,000 tons in 1958 and after 400,000 tons in 1961.
1962 – The exponential increase of the motor-vehicle number brings the turning-point that clashes with the fulfillment of OLGESA storage and oil pipes. The crude oil starts to flow from Multedo oil harbor straight into the refinery. The treatment capacity grows further on until a million of tons per year in 1965 and 1,600,000 tons in 1972.
1976 - The first vacuum distillation is put on trial.
1981 - The new thermal conversion furnace is made. They start the first intervention to decrease environment impact and invest on the introduction of methane gas. The refinery aim is investing to get clear products – with low sulfur content – with the best technology available.

The Reorganization
1988 - A new reorganization plan is launched scheduling, among the other aspects, an aimed production toward particular market niche. (extremely safe products or products which cannot be sent by oil pipelines). A new reorganization plan brings to a company relaunching especially for the choice of productive strategy bent on the low part of the barrel. A production based on the specialized production of bitumen and ecological fuel products, with very low sulfur content: ECODEN, ECOFLU, ECOFUEL.
All the production delivered by road haulage and rail transport is non-inflammable at conservation temperature.
Iplom removes the petrol and LPG storage to reduce the own local risk index.

The Environmental Engagement
1990- IPLOM realizes a plastic wall in defence of the Scrivia stream pebbly riverbank. A concrete and bentonite wall, with inside a sheet in HDPE (plastic), able to completely isolate the refinery ground from the Scrivia riverbank averting occasional spilling.
1995 - We realized the cogeneration system considering the energy conservation and for a more rational use of energy.
1997 - We realized the Catalytic hydrotreatment system for the desulphurization of diesel and fuel oil.
1999 - IPLOM is the first refinery in Italy realizing a system to monitor the emissions. Called PEMS (Predictive Emission Monitoring System), it is connected to the weather forecast local stations and to the plant control room. It can estimate the fallout of the chimney stack emissions on the ground, according to the local orographic map.
1999 – We bring “zero emission” in the Crane bunker, to block the fetid emission coming from the Virgin Naphtha pump.
2003 – Installation of automatic skimming system for every cold water treatment system in the refinery and in Boccarda bunker.
2004 - We bring in the ozonization plant of the processing waters.
2004 – Carbon dioxide recycling plant with 3’000 kg/h warehouse capacity.
2006 – Increase of the amino scrubbing system of the refinery gas.
